Yoga Nidra

Have you tried Yoga Nidra? Do you know what Yoga Nidra is? Yoga Nidra is the Science of Divine Sleep. Some people refer to it as ‘Sleep Yoga’, or ‘The Yoga of Sleep’, or ‘Sacred Sleep Yoga’. It’s the combination of relaxation and guided meditation, but much more. It has specific sequencing and patterns that the teacher prompts and directs the student through, therefore, making the student experience profound rest – beyond regular relaxation or guided meditation – the sequencing allows the brain to move into an altered state of consciousness – as if you were sleeping – mimicking sleep. Simply, a 20 minute session of Yoga Nidra is equivalent to 2-3 hours of sleep – a great way to catch up on much needed rest and recover from sleep deprivation. If possible, practice Yoga Nidra 2-3 times throughout the week – you can even practice it in your car during lunch hour – not while driving!…however, recline your car seat back, get comfy, breathe and listen to Yoga Nidra – you’ll thank yourself afterwards – as you will feel revived and rejuvenated for the rest of your day. I’m a certified trained Yoga Nidra teacher (and have been practicing myself for many years)…Below, I’ve put together a YouTube video for you of a 22-minute Yoga Nidra practice. Watch the first few minutes for specific instructions and then you can settle in, close your eyes and listen to and practice Yoga Nidra – follow my voice and remain still. Enjoy!

Here is an excerpt taken from Swami Satyananda Saraswati’s book, explaining how Yoga Nidra increases memory function:
Yoga Nidra is a method which has been adopted by many pioneering educators as a means of improving conscious recall and thereby increasing memory function and learning capacity. Two factors are involved in the process of memory. The first is the brain’s ability to absorb information and the second is its ability to recall information later on. Yoga Nidra works on both these levels by establishing a state of maximum receptivity in the subconscious mind, along with a simultaneous state of awareness.
